Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Audition help?

Question:Alright, I've been acting for a while, and I need help preparing for an audition. The play is West Side Story and I'm auditioning for Anybodys. I know the character doesn't sing, but the auditions are a singing call.

I'm a mezzo-soprano (but can go higher if called for), I'm fifteen, and I'm looking for good audition songs. It absolutely needs to be uptempo, and somewhat fitting for the musical. It can't be anything from Rent or Wicked (don't ask me why).

I also need advise on doing a cold-reading. I know to speak loudly (as appropriate) and all that jazz, but just little things that would make me memorable candidate.

Also, the callbacks are a dance-call, which is where I'm gonna have the most problems because the only dance I've done recently was belly dancing two years ago - not much help now. So just general advise with dancing is extremely important.

Anything would be a grand help!
Thanks.

As far as songs go, try...

The Beauty Is - Light in the Piazza (a bit ingenuey, but pretty)
My Strongest Suit - Aida (LOVE THIS - underused and really makes an impression, but only if you can rock it.)
Waiting for Life - Once on This Island

Those are all great audition songs. I especially reccomment My Strongest Suit if you have a bit of belt because it's a wonderful, underused audition song that really makes you be remembered.
For cold readings, skim it fast and figure out that character's motivation - why is he or she saying/doing this? Also, figure out your relationship with whomever you are reading with. You speak differently to your boyfriend than to your mother - so figure it out! Construct a setting in your mind, it doesn't need to be true to the show if you don't know it. Get familiar with the script of West Side Story if you can, since they'll probably use something from the show. Just make sure that you give it personality and know these above all else: motivation and relation.

As far as dancing, if you can't do it, don't be afraid to laugh at yourself in front of the panel. The funnier you can be while doing a dance you suck at, the more you're remembered as being a good sport.
Break a leg!!

try not to be too worried, coz then u wont remember what your doing!!
good luck :)

I am also auditioning for stuff like that. You should sing something like

Good Morning Baltimore (Hairspray)
Popular (Wicked)
My head is swirly right now I think of some more later.
