Question:ok so i'm auditioning for footloose tomorrow...i've got my song down well, but i've been wondering if i should just stand there on stage and sing my song, or if i should move my arms? dance a little? i feel a little awkward just standing there, but the focus is on the singing not the dancing (there is a separate dance audition) advice please!!!!

I would definitely sing throughout the body -- that is, don't just sing from your mouth or you will simply be a singing head. That's boring. Don't over-emote, but you should definitely let the song flow through your body as indicated by the lyrics. If the song is a fun one, you definitely want to convey that w/your body language. Stay in character. That will dicate your movement as well. Break a leg!!!

In the production you will be singing while dancing, correct? That is far more difficult than just singing or just dancing. I would only do both if you are absolutely confident. At the very least, I would say movement is good but not a whole routine.

yes it shows that you are confident. When you are doing a real show you do move your arms, the director wants to see what you can do on your own.

Don't dance. You'll look pathetic and unsure. Sing, and if something feels natural, do it.

Don't try to tack on any movement that isn't natural. You can show extensive movement at the dance portion. And sometimes stillness can be very powerful. Don't be tense or stiff, just natural.

You should absolutely feel free to move as the song suggests to you, but don't dance. If there's a dance audition, dance then. If not, obviously the people producing the show aren't that concerned about it. They want to hear you sing, so sing.

But again, don't stand there like a plank either. It is "Footloose," after all, so loosen your feet. ;-)

If the song makes ya wanna dance, dance! My best friend danced at his footloose audition and got a great part. You mustn't over do it though...it might make you look unprofesional and cheesey.

i would say to just do whatever you want. i'm taking a class and my teacher has told me that body language is also a very good thing because is keeps people entertained and the most important thing when it comes to performing is to keep the audience's attention on you. so if you feel like dancing go ahead or if you just feel like moving your arms around go ahead because as long as you have the people's attention it's all good ;)
