Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Limited vocal range - audition suggestions?

Question:I'm an alto auditioning for Oklahoma!, and hoping for Aunt Eller, Annie, or even Gertie. I was thinking about "Wonderful Guy" from South Pacific, or even something from a Sondheim show like Into the Woods. I don't know, though. Sugestions, please?

Wondeful Guy would work. Stay away from Sondheim for this show.

It's best to choose a song that's in the style of the show or the character (sorry, but none of those modern shows like Wicked or Millie are going to be appropriate. It's a different sound. Oklahoma is not a pop-musical). Some others to take a look at:

You Can't Get a Man With a Gun - Annie Get Your Gun
No Lies - The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Always True to You in my Fashion - Kiss me Kate
Safety in Numbers - The Boyfriend
The Love of My Life - Brigadoon

anything from "hairspray" is amazing.

or something from "thoroughly modern millie."
"not for the life of me" is a good song.
and so is "gimme gimme"

go listen. i highly recommend it.

"bye bye birdie" is a really good musical also.

These aren't my ideas, but I've seen them suggested by other people as good pieces for altos:

"Tomorrow Belongs to Me (Reprise)"- Cabaret (the one sung by Fr. Kost)
"Hold On"- Secret Garden (this one is a bit tricky, but with some work is a great alto piece)
"SOmeone Else's Story"- Chess
"Papa Can You Hear Me"- Yentl (fairly high in original key, but transpose it down an octave and it's great)
"All for You"- Seussical
"On My Own"- Les Miz (Doesn't go any higher than a C5

Gertie doesn't have a solo. You could learn part of Aunt Eller's song "The Farmer and The Cow Man" -- its very easy -- or Ado Annie's "Can't Say No." "Wonderful Guy" has a much wider range than "Farmer and The Cow Man" so if you want a Rodgers and Hammerstein song with a limited range for an alto, try "It's Possible" from Cinderella.

"Something Good" from The Sound of Music doesn't go too far up or down. :D

"So What" from Cabaret.
