Lighting is very important in this play. I would use lamps with dimmers and any sort of firelight available from the set fireplace (candles or their set equivalent would be great). Also, this play takes place during the Christmas season, so seasonal decoration with lights would also be a nice touch. Since some of the dialogue mentions the light specifically, this is a good question. I also recommend watching the movie to get set, lighting, and costume ideas.

Watch the movie. It has Jane Fonda in it. You will get good ideas for lighting. Basically, they used outdoor light. Even in the house, they used light coming in through the windows. In a play, you would need to use special types of lamps to create a natural effect.
