Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Bonnie in Anything Goes?

Question:What kind/how big of a part is Bonnie in Anything Goes? That's going to be my school's musical, and I think I'm going to try for Bonnie, because on the sheet I got about it, that's the only part that said there was tap dancing. I've been tapping for 8 years and love it, and I'm especially excited because I did a tap dance to the title song about three years ago. So if anyone could give me some info on her, or a good monologue that would fit with her personality, that would be great! I also think I'm going to sing Showoff [only 16 bars of the appropriate parts] from The Drowsy Chaperone for my audition song. Do you think that it would be good?

I love Anything Goes, it's one of my favourite musicals! You're very lucky your school is putting it on. The character Bonnie would be a very fun part to play!

I think you are doing the original 1962 version of the show if you have a character named Bonnie. She is a fairly central part of the show and sings two solo songs "Heaven Hop" and "Let's Step Out" - both really fun, upbeat songs. If I remember correctly she doesn't really do any ballad singing (except for maybe a few lines) so depending on which part of "Show Off" you want to sing you maybe should use something else. If your using the first part of the song that's really slow, I'd suggest choosing a different part or something else that is more upbeat.

As far as tap dancing goes, I think it's strange that you were told that Bonnie is the only part with tap dancing. When I saw "Anything Goes" onstage almost all the females tap dance at some point, some males too. Reno, the lead female, tap dances a lot, especially during the title number. Amazing tap dancing is one of the things the show's known for.

Bonnie is a very lighthearded, happy-go-lucky kind of character. Any monologue to that effect would be good. I suggest going to stageagent.com and searching for one. You can put in criteria there as well when you search like character age, gender, monologue length, etc.

I hope this helped. All the best with the audition, break a leg!
