Position:Home>Theater & Acting> During an audition, where should I look?

Question:am doing Baba the Turk's aria from Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress.
My character is continuously talking to her husband - chatty at first then gets enraged with him.
She finished by basically screaming at him and the best way I can see doing this is by performing directly out front. Can I use the jury as a my 'invisible' partner, or am I going to be obligated to direct the whole thing 30° downstage? P.S My 'husband's' character is sitting.

Speaking as someone who has been in on both sides of the audition process I can safely say that people you are auditioning for want to see your face, but do not like it when you make eye contact or perform "to them".

The best to place your 'husband' on the 4th wall, just above the heads of the people auditioning you.

This allows them to see your face, while not feeling uncomfortable that you are looking AT them.

It's usually not a good idea to break the 4th wall. You will show more creativity and imagination directing your performance at an angle to the "invisible" character. This will prove that your acting ability does not rely on the actual presence of a real person.
