Position:Home>Theater & Acting> What is the difference between a soliloquy and a monologue?

Question:The answer is quite simple- a monologue is a "mini speech" in which one of the main characters in a play is directly addressing to the audience or the observers. Soliloquy is a certain type of monologue in which the protagonist or any other character addresses personally to the audience, secretly without the knowledge of the rest of the characters. Therefore, the character conveys personal information about the other characters or herself such as intimate thoughts, intentions or any other information that is crucial for the audience's understanding of the play. Unlike the monologue, a soliloquy is conducted when the character is ALONE on stage, when there is no else around but her and the audience, while a "regular" monologue can occur while putting the action of the play and the rest of the characters "on pause" and focus only on this one character who chooses to address to the audience.

A soliloquy is generally directed towards an audience and is usually spoken as an "aside" (meaning..so another character cannot hear)
A monologue is directed towards another character, either offstage or onstage.

Hope that helps!
