Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Alto audition peice for Chicago?

Question:I am auditioning for my college production of Chicago soon, and I haven't picked a song yet. While I do have a decent range, my voice is inherently deep (maybe almost even raspy) and I sound better singing alto ranged songs.

My only succesful audition song has been "Hold On" from the Secret Garden, but I don't feel it fits the style of Chicago at all. Does anyone have a more fitting (playful, jazzy?) alto song for the musical Chicago? Please and Thank you.

Any other tips for my audition would be greatly appreciated as well.

Another Kander and Ebb piece would be ideal.

For other similiar jazzy-style broadway, look at:

Blow Gabriel Blow - Anything Goes
Johnny One Note - Babes in Arms
The Saga of Jenny - Lady in the Dark
Can't Help Lovin That Man of Mine (slow it down and sing it down an octave for a jazzy feel) - Show Boat

As for audition tips, this show had 2 very strong female characters, so whatever song you do, you have to go in and sell it! There is no room for doubt and shyness with any of these characters OR with any of the above audition songs. Be sexy and confident (or at least pretend to be!) I don't know what you usually wear to auditions, but you could wear your black character shoes (I assume you have some!) with fishnets with a black skirt and a form fitting top. Not too over the top, but something that could work for your character and allow you to do the dance portion as well (unless you need to change). Do you hair and makeup in a vaguely 20's style, not so that it's obvious, but will give you more of a vintage look (and being in "costume" will help you get into character better!)

Check out Ute Lemper's performance of "Saga of Jenny" on You Tube for inspiration. She's fantastic!!

Good luck!

Maybe you could try doing a sonmg that is from Chicago. Otherwise I can't really help you! Break a leg!

Nowadays-roxie's version

When you're good to mama

Roxie

Those are all really good numbers from the show

I'm Not That Girl from wicked is really good too.

A humorous one would be "They Don't Know" from Thouroughlly Modern Millie.

Don't do anything from Chicago. Those poor people are going to have to listen to "All That Jazz" dozens of times during the auditions!

I think that "They Don't Know" from Thoroughly Modern Millie is a fantastic suggestion. Another one from TMM could be "Gimmie Gimmie" -- it's a GREAT belting song and the song style is similar to Chicago.

Break a leg!
