Stage Manager: Most important is being a good communicator and listener. You spend most of the time listening to other peoples conversations for little snippets of potentially important information regarding the production and then sending notes to all departments with requests for costume, lighting, sound effects etc. With this, comes discretion - you get told information which can be private (medical conditions or personal circumstances which don't need to be public knowlege, occasionally famous actors addresses and telephone numbers which should not be made available to anyone else).
Co-ordination (especially if cueing lighting, sound, flies, actors etc during a show).
As a stage manager, you are expected to be a fountain of all knowlege - from where the closest bank is, to where the nearest car park is, how much discount there is on tickets and many other day to day things which aren't technically part of a production.
Organisation. From working out calls with the director, to fitting in meetings, costume fittings, press interviews into an already busy rehearsal schedule.
Budgeting for prop buying and making and occasionally (depending on production), working out the payroll and making sure that all are being paid properly for the hours worked.
Ability to use a computer. Note writing, researching on the internet, making paper props (letters, documents etc).
Interests - anything and everything! I have shelves of books containing potentially useful information on all sorts of subjects - collected over the years when I have been doing period productions (Yes, books are still needed!). It helps to know when things were invented, for example, so that you can advise whether a prop is in period or not.
Most training courses for Stage Managers are at degree level now (not when I trained though!)
But you can still get into the job without a degree.
Not every stage manager is good at everything, but knowledge is gained by experience. The more you do, the more you learn and every job has a different challenge. It also helps if you have a good sense of humour!

go to www.act-sf.org

the marketing director at the ACT is responsible for this site and everything on it. At the end of the day it's the marketing director's job to put butts in seats.

Look, you have to do the work yourself otherwise it is pointless. You have to be willing, in theatre, to understand and know what every ones job is. Theatre is the single most collaborative art form that there is. If one person was missing from the picture the show wouldn't go on. Do the work and appreciate every ones job.
