I think it is horrible that to get reconition they have to play child predators, murders and other things like that to gain recognition. It adds to the lack of character building in our society. So it is really hard to keep them as good role modles.

No. It shows that they can stretch themselves as actors.

Comics yearn to be taken seriously as actors. Villains are fun to play, and can stretch a comic actor's chops.

Villainy is merely the flip side of comedy. Comedy is rooted in cruelty (cf. the clowns in Dumbo). Your disappointment is a testament to the skill of the actor. You want funny, you get scary. Kudos to Mr. Williams.

On the contrary...I am interested to see the actor extend her or his "range" and perfect their chosen craft. A multiplicity of roles gives depth to the actor, both as an actor and as a human being. The first time I saw Robin Williams in a non-comedic role (same with Jim Carey), I, too, was forced to expand the envelope of my expectations.
