Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Looking for a "motherly" song to sing at an audition.?

Question:I have a lot of belty things in my book that aren't right. I'm looking for something more motherly, along the lines of "Hold On" from Secret Garden but maybe less overdone. I'm a mezzo. Any genius ideas?

Look at "Goodbye, My Love," sung by Mother toward the beginning of "Ragtime". It's got a terrific "aching" quality to it, nice range, and bit of expansiveness -- lots of levels to show auditors what you can do. If I was a woman, I'd have it in my repertoire.

Also look at "Moments in the Woods" that the Baker's Wife sings in "Into the Woods." Very engaging song.

How about:

Once Upon a December from Anastasia the movie!

there was a great ballad from "Into the Woods", oh yeah "Stay with Me"... it's really good...

i dont know what you mean by motherly.. but if you havent heard the song "I'll stand by you" by Carrie Underwood, you should download it. when i listen to it, i think of my god daughters, & thats kind of motherly. =]

"Mother" from Pink Floyd "The Wall." I know it's not a theater song, but it would be unexpected.Perhaps you could put your own spin on it.

"I'd Give My Life for You" from Miss Saigon is about as "motherly" as you can get, and it should be in your range if you are a mezzo. It is not as overdone as some of the other songs from the show also.

"as long as he needs me" from oliver and "distant melody" from peter pan, distant melody is sort of a duet but you could easily just take the melody.
