Beats are where there is a thought change. And breaths are where you take a natural breath. It's not as difficult as it seems. Just look at your monologue and read it naturally, and see where the breaths come.

Beats are just pauses. They're usually next to significant mood changes, commas, and ellipses. You know how sometimes the script has a line that just feels like it should be rushed and pushed through, despite length? The beats and breaths are the opposite--places written into the text where a pause is important for meaning or emphasis. If you're working with iambic pentameter, the assignment ought to be particularly easy.
