Macbeth is loosely based on the career of a King Macbeth of Scotland. He was a commander under King Duncan I. Macbeth murdered Duncan in the year 1040 and claimed the kingdom for himself. After a rule of 17 years, Macbeth was killed by Duncan’s son Malcolm, who later became King Malcolm III.

It was a play among hundreds that Shakespeare wrote....
It talks about how Macbeth became Greedy and selfish once he achieved a small taste of power...

Shakespeare's play _Macbeth_ was based on Holished's _Chronicles_, which basically went through the history of England and its kings and queens. Because Holinshed was operating in the Tudor/Stuart period, he was a Tudor/Stuart apoligist and tended to glorify those who ended up surviving and procreating and vilifying those who did not. Since James I was a decendent of those who opposed Macbeth it seemed only natural to glorify his antecedents and vilify the opponents of those antecedents. That's the old-fashioned version of "politically correct." ;)
