Position:Home>Theater & Acting> The Wiz...?

Question:My mainstage production show this year in my theater company is The Wiz. I've heard of it, but don't know much of the music. What can you tell me about the show? How can I prepare--acting-wise and vocally (ps... I am a soprano).

Thanks so much!!

The Wiz is an updated version of "The Wizard of Oz". I saw the show on Broadway with an all African-American cast. The musical style is R&B, gospel, hip-hop, and jazz ballad, as opposed to the original Wizard of Oz which was music of the 30's and 40's. You could try out for Glenda the good witch. She has one of the show-stopping songs called "When I think of Home." Whitney Houston sang it in the movie version with Brandi as Dorothy.

Break a leg for your audition!

I would love to help you but I dont know anything about it!
Check out with the director what to prepare for your audition. Ask them about the story. If you can, sing a song that shows your talent thats NOT from the musical, because they will get your talent with a song you already know.

The son is called simply, "Home" and yes, it's a great song. It's an R&B version of The Wizard of Oz. The 1978 film version starred Michael Jackson and Diana Ross among others. Ease on Down The Road is also a fun song :-)

Also, stageagent has Glinda listed as an alto... maybe it depends on the music your production plans to use? Look at the link, check out the character descriptions and synopsis which is a more urban Wizard of Oz.

good luck,
