Position:Home>Theater & Acting> In the play Bye Bye Birdie, is Mrs. Peterson a good role?

Question:Does she get any songs? What are her characteristics? Does she have any special moments? I need to know as much as possible because I got her for the community play.
Thank you so much!!

Thank you so much!!

Mrs. Peterson is the mother of the Dick Van Dyke character (he's the English teacher who sings "Put on a Happy Face").

She should be a little bit over-weight and a little messy looking. Whatever you do with her voice, make sure you speak clearly and with good volume. This character does not sing. I don't think she's even in the chorus (it wouldn't make sense for the character).

You will make or break the character depending on how much pure power you bring to your portrayal. She can be memorable and yet annoying. You'll receive thunderous applause at the curtain call if you play her well and a little clapping if you over or under play her. This goes to what petty actors do when they think they have a small or insignificant role. If you give your role some real character, the audience will love you. Think about ways to fill her out and keep it real. You'll have fun doing it and the audience will respond favorably.

Anyway, congratulations on getting the part and do your best with it. Break a leg! Rob R
