Is the story puss in boots copyrighted?

According to wikipedia, Puss in Boots is public domain because the copyright has lapsed. (if you scroll to the bottom of the link I have below, you will see that the story is listed under public domain characters).

I would think that most old fairytales are public domain at this point unless you're using the copyrighted 'disneyfied' versions.
