Why would Shakespeare want his play to please the king?

Look at it as the greatest reward one could get back in that time. There were no Tony Awards. If the play please the Queen and King then that was the highest praise he could receive.

Most of the Canon were written during the reign of Elizabeth Tudor, who, in case you hadn't noticed, was not a King.
