Question:Okay in January our school is going to have auditions for the musical Godspell...

This Fall I auditioned for the play A Connecticut Yankee in King Arther's Court, but I didn't get a part. Ms. Lip (The Drama teacher) was kind enough to offer me a job on stage crew even though the crew was full. I accepted...I mean atleast I get to be envoled...but I was sad because I really wanted to be on stage.

Now I have another chance. The auditions for Godspell is coming up soon. I am not the best singer in the world, but hey not alot of people at our school are.

I am just worried I won't get a part...I want to be on stage...I hate watching from behind the scenes.

I looked into Godspell and saw it only had 10 parts...which scared me alot...then my friend told me there are alot of chorus parts...is this correct?

How can I show the Drama Teacher I want to be on stage and how can I do the best job and guarente atleast a part.

Thanks!

Don't worry, there's good news!

You've already shown your drama teacher (hopefully by having a good attitude while working backstage) that you're a team player. Every day you're in class or rehearsal is like an audition. She probably gave you that crew position to get an idea of what kind of person you are, and whether she wants to cast/work with you in the future.

Now, here's what I think you should do for your audition:

One of the main songs for a female role is 'Turn Back, O Man' and here's some more good news-you don't have to be a great singer to do it! It's supposed to be a really funny song, and the way I've heard it in recordings suggests a type of Mae West style. Don't know who Mae West is? Look her up!

Here's how you do it-

Perform the song as if you're doing it for an actual show. Have FUN with it, it's a really fun song! Dress up like a five year old who's trying to look like Marilyn Monroe-including platinum blonde wig, but DON'T make it sexy, make it funny/cute. Involve your audience when you do it, even if you're only performing for Ms. Lip.

Now, if for some reason you don't get cast, keep this in mind: you will have done a really good, very thoughtful/well produced audition and shown your teacher that you really care about doing well and making it onstage. And if you ask nicely, she'd probably be more than happy to tell you what might help you the next time around. Just keep a good attitude and try to enjoy what you're doing. Nine times out of ten a director will cast someone mediocre with an amazing attitude over someone talented but snotty.

im always worried about auditions!!!!! but i realalized that[its really kinda weird] when i go to auditions, expecting to get the part, and getting scared, i dont get it. but when im really mellow, and dont make ahuge deal out of it, i get the part! so just really try to calm down. drink tea, take naps, tyr to stay relaxed. if you dont, you gat all tense, and worried. but if you stay calm, you perform your best! break a leg! you wiil do great, even if you dont get the part!

If you aren't the best singer, then wow them with acting out a song. Don't choose anything too rangy. Something that's cute or funny will impress them if you act it out well. Make sure the range the song has is in your best range and go out there and have fun...however fun an audition can be...well try not to think of it as something to be nervous about. Imagine them cheering for you before you get up there. The directors clap for everyone so you don't need to worry about how well you are doing and what they will say about your performance. When you're performing say it the moment of the song and don't let your mind or eelings wander from what the song is about.

The thing about performing on stage is, you won't get noticed unless you at least aspire to be the lead. If you go into this trying to get in the chorus then you will find yourself backstage again supporting the cast.
If all you want is to be hidden in the back of the chorus just so you can say you performed on stage then I say you really don't have a place on stage in the theatre.

So go to the audition and sing one of the solo's meant for the female lead in the show.

Next, is confidence.
You said that you aren't the best singer in the world.
So then why in heck are you trying to get into a stage musical if you are prepared to say things like that about your abilities? There is a difference between knowing your limitations, and putting yourself down.
I recommend that you go to the audition prepared to perform the most challenging song in the musical, but actually perform something that is slightly less challenging. Then if you get a callback and are asked to perform the more challenging song you won't get caught off guard.

There is a difference between trying out for a school play than one on Broadway. For one thing you are competing in a smaller talent pool.
But one thing that all casting directors have in common is they are looking for people who can capture the hearts of the audience. If you can do that, then you don't have to have the best voice in the world.

So how can you show the drama teacher that you REALLY want to be on stage?

Aspire to be a STAR!

OK. Godspell, one of my favorite musicals. Only 10 parts, (Jesus and his disciples and John the Baptist))NO chorus. Womens's parts all minor as they take disciple roles.. You need to take voice lessons, maybe you could get a voice teacher to teach you to sing one song well. Go rent the movie!

When it comes time to audition, you must do it with energy and enthusiasim and joy. Show what a good time you are having and how much fun it is to do what you are doing. Acting is playing after all and playing is fun. Have a blast !
