Question:im a girl alto singer.
and im having a hard time finding the right song to sing for auditions.
auditions are november 17th so i have very little time to prepare. But the requirments are it has to be a song from a musical and i wanted to do "hold me tight" from the musical movie "across the universe" but when i suggested it to her she said i could do it but it wouldn't be a good choice so....thats where i am right now.

If you know any songs that would a good choice to sing please post the name of the song and the musical it is from.

Thanks so much

It's hard cause I don't know what type of song you need. I'm an alto and some personal favorites are "Always a Bridesmaid" from I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.
"Fine, Fine Line" from Avenue Q, "My Friend, The Dictionary" from 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, "Mrs. Taylor's Lullaby" from Bat Boy The Musical, "Turn Back, O Man" or "Learn Your Lessons Well" from Godspell, and "My New Philosophy" from You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
These can be higher or lower depending on your range as an alto. Hope this helps!

"Reflection" by Christina Aguliara
"Can't fight the moonlight" by Leann Rimes

"Send in the Clowns," from A Little Night Music (Sondheim)

"Bali Ha'i," from South Pacific (Rodgers & Hammerstein)

'On my own' from Les Miserables, or 'As long as he needs me' from Oliver.

To be technical, usually audition material should be from musical theatre and a movie musical does not qualify as theatre so it's best to choose from established musical theatre for your repetoire. That doens't mean you can't learn "Hold Me Tight" for when an audition calls for a non-traditional pop-style audition song which does happen :-)

For now, you may want to try and think of songs in your range that you are familisr with since you have so little prep time. It's best to try to choose something that could also be sung by the character you are auditioning for. A song that shows similar traits that is in your (and the character's) vocal range. Since I don't know what that is, I suggest:

Another Op'nin', Another Show - Kiss Me, Kate
Don't Rain on my Parade - Funny Girl
You're The Top - Anything Goes
When You Got It, Flaunt It - The Producers
Meadowlark - The Baker's Wife
They Say It's Wonderful - Annie Get Your Gun
I Don't Know How To Love Him - Jesus Christ Superstar
Part of Your World - The Little Mermaid
Someone Like You - Jekyll & Hyde
Someone Else's Story - Chess

This is a list I found from a past answer:
I Don't Know How To Love Him from Jesus Christ Superstar
Belle (reprise) from Beauty and the Beast
Feed the Birds from Mary Poppins
Honey Bun from South Pacific
I Got the Sun in the Morning from Annie Get Your Gun
I'll Know from Guys and Dolls (this song gets pretty high in some parts)
I Have Confidence from The Sound of Music
If Momma Was Married from Gypsy
In My Own Little Corner from Cinderella
It's a Most Unusual Day from A Date With Judy
Just You Wait from My Fair Lady
Many a New Day from Oklahoma!
Much More from The Fantasticks
My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music
On My Own from Les Miserables
People Will Say We're in Love from Oklahoma!
Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid
Sixteen Going on Seventeen from The Sound of Music
Stepsisters' Lament from Cinderella
There are Worse Things I Could Do from Grease
Hopelessly Devoted to You from Grease
Wouldn't It Be Loverly from My Fair Lady
There's a Fine, Fine Line from Avenue Q
When There Was Me and You from High School Musical
Notice Me, Horton from Seussical
My Friend, the Dictionary from The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee
I Speak Six Languages from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Every Story is a Love Story from Aida
