Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Do you HAVE to be able to sing to be in theatre? Or is just acting K?

Question:Famous John Wayne couldn't sing worth a darn, but was well liked by most anyway. However, he never made it as a 'singing cowboy' which gave Roy Rogers and Gene Autry their chance as famous cowboy stars. So, it would always be better to be multi-talented to be successful as an actor. Sing, dance, play an instrument, and speak well with projection and you can get many more parts in plays (or movies). Good luck.

Having both skill can help you a great deal to score a great part. If the play is a musical of course you would. As long as you have a great speaking voice that can project to the back rows of the theatre you should be fine.

whell u have to have a bit of both

There is theatre and musical theatre. theatre is plays with dialogue etc... musical theatre is where every other scene usually has a song with some dancing in it. To answer your question no, but If you ever have a interest in musicals then singing and dancing would be a very important part.
