Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Joseph vs Music Man?

Question:I am a 17 year old girl who has limited oportunities to increase her theatrical horizens being i live in a town of like 7 people. I have the oportunity to travel 45 minutes to try out for either Joseph and the amazing technicolor dream coat or Music man

What play would give me a better chance to improve on my skills as well as the most stage diva time-being i rarely am given the opportunity

My weakness as far as performing goes is deffinently dancing I just lack the experience. i would like to improve my skills but not have dancing be a barrier from getting the biggest part possible

Is mrs potiphar's part involving a lot of dancing or do you think the role in general is too risque for me to play in a community theatre production I saw it in a high school and it was cute but it may be different

Any insite is greatly appreciated

Depending on the production, Joseph has a fair amount of dance. The show is meant to be G/PG, and was initially written to be performed at schools, so I highly doubt Mrs. Potiphar will go beyond very mildly naughty. There are only a few "lead" roles, but this is very much an ensemble show, so chances are good you will have multiple smaller roles.

Music Man is about equal cast-size wise, and there are more women's parts: Marian, Zenita, Mrs. Paroo (for an older woman), the mayor's wife (also generally older) and a chorus of town ladies. But the action is centered on your main characters -- not quite as much for the chorus to do. This is more intensive dance-wise, and the music a little more challenging.

Well there aren't HUGE female leads in either but Joseph would probably be a better experience.

But when you're looking for a dance show i'd take Music Man. It's mainly a dance show.
However if you don't have any experience i sort of doubt they'll take you in.

Take some dance classes. There are plenty of 17 year olds out there that cant dance and are looking for guidance. Its not like your gonna be with 5 year olds.

Hope i helped

I've seen these shows and they both have strong female leads. The character of the Narrator in Joseph is a part that is based almost 100% vocal ability - plus he/she is in almost every scene. If I remember correctly the Narrator does pretty much no dancing whatsoever. You need to be a soprano for that role. That's really the only role I can see a teenage girl playing in that show.

In The Music Man there is the character of Marian, she is also a soprano. She does very little dancing but you may be too young to play this role. However there are lots of extra parts you may be able to get as kids/teens are a central part of this show.

So, if you want to go for getting a leading female role, I'd shoot for Joseph. But if you want to play it safe and increase your odds of being in a show, even if it's just the chorus, I'd go for The Music Man. The choice is yours!

All the best, break a leg! :)

I would go with Music Man. It has more bigger girl parts. In Joseph the only nig girl parts are the narrator and Mrs. Potiphar (and she's a pretty minor major role). If it's chorus you'd prefer, go with Joseph. There are about 11-12 wives/mothers.

I believe that Joseph would give you the better oppertunity

I don't recall a lot of parts for girls in Joseph but there are in the Music Man.

There is a lot of dancing in the Music Man

Why don't you go for the lead or the teenage daughter.

The teenage daughter (Mayor's Eldest) is in some choice scenes but don't do a lot of heavy work other than a dance number or two.

The lead has lot of work. Marion would be a chunky role.

There's also the piano student. Esmerleda.

But that's usually a pubsecent role.

It would be a trip to see the Barber Shop quartet as all girl or even co ed!
