It is referred to as 'getting the hook' and it came from the U.S. early days of vaudeville, wherein the stage manager used a long pole with a hook on it to remove especially persistent performers, who kept on going even when the audience had started booing. Some think that it had origins in England via an agricultural/mining expression of 'slinging your hook', but most agree that it was American vaudeville in origin.
