Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I Need Help Picking a Song for the Thesbian Competition?

Question:I have a very wide vocal range, and can pretty much sing any style but belt. It needs to be a female solo from a broadway musical. I prefer sad songs. Anyone have any ideas? I've come up with these so far:
1. Tell Me On A Sunday (from Tell Me On A Sunday)
2. Another Suitcase in Another Hall (Evita)
3. You Must Love Me (Evita)
4. On My Own (Les Misarables)
5. Now That I've Seen Her (Miss Saigon)
6. No Good Deed (Wicked)
7. There Are Worse Things I Could Do (Grease)

Any advice?

All of the ones you list are great but for me the biggest tear jerker is On My Own. There also was an album that Bernadette Peters did years ago. Can't recall the name but the jacket had a Vargas painting of her. I remember listening to it over and over when I was really blue and crying my heart out. I first heard about the album when she sang a song from it on Johnny Carson and cried herself, whilst singing it (have no idea how she did that). I always loved her as an actress but gained even more esteem for her when I saw that show (& of course now you can guess how ancient I am & also I sobbed when she sang it on the show). Good luck with the competition.

PS: Mercutiogal, I just thought of another. The Jennifer Holiday song from Dreamgirls. I'm listing links that you might be interested in, granted some are not all Broadway torch songs.

On My Own would be the best, because it shows a little bit more culture than the rest.

I don't know all the music mentioned, but here's my opinion:
2. Boring and monotonous.
3. NOT from the Broadway version. Written especially for the film.
4. Good, but overdone.
6. Powerhouse number!
7. OK, but not stellar.

I'd go for No Good Deed, personally. Oh, and the word is "thespian" with a "p". The other way, it sounds like you're lisping about girl-on-girl stuff.

Of the six listed, I would personally recomend no good deed. The song is extremely powerful if you can portray the emotions involved.

I love "Another Suitcase in Another Hall". "On My Own" is done to death...

For a thespian competition, find something that shows as much emotion as possible. I think No Good Deed would be an incredible number to do, personally. You can really convey Elphaba's sadness, anger, and frustration in the lyrics and movement!

Just curious, where's the comp? Most Drama/Thespian Comps are about acting not singing.

Oh yeah and my two cents are for something classic by Rogers and Hammerstein. My personal favs are from South Pacific.
