These days, it really doesn't matter. Techically "o" for male, "a" for female, and "i" for the company.

Just stand up and shout, if you feel the performer deserves it.
We do hear it, believe me.

Bravo is an spanish word used to congratulate someone's performance, it is an interjection, not an adjective. Interjections in spanish apply to both genders. If you'd use the spanish word "brava" to congratulate a female actress, instead of "bravo", you would be qualifying her as a brave person, not necessarily congratulating her.

bravo-is an italian word used to congratulate someone for being talented at something.
