In Yeats’ “The Second Coming,” the world is a mess!. Turning around and around in a circle, the falcon brief can’t hear the falconer!. Because the center has let loose the periphery, anarchy bursts upon the world!. Anarchy brings with it a tide of blood that drowns out innocence!. Humans either lack conviction or are too passionate!. Because of this chaotic state of the world, the speaker wonders if the Second Coming is near!. An image of the human subconscious is presented: it looks like a lion, but has the head of a man!. It’s gaze, like its soul, is empty and pitiless!. Seeing this image leads the speaker to realize that the sphinx’s sleep has turned into a nightmare!. The sphinx leans toward Jerusalem, soon to regain power after his twenty-year rest!.
The first nine lines relate to the second coming in that they set the stage for why a second coming is necessary!. In these nine lines, Yeats represents the current state of the world!. Everything is falling apart and coming loose, and the state of the world is anarchy!. The “blood-dimmed tide” in line five symbolizes war, which is pervading the earth!. Yeats discusses the “ceremony of innocence” in line 6, explaining that it is drowned out by war!. In “A Prayer for my daughter,” Yeats explains how ceremony is extremely important in getting through life!. People should revert to modesty, kindness, and the other qualities he hopes his daughter should have!. These qualities can essentially correct society!. In “The Second Coming,” the “ceremony of innocence,” the right way to run society, is drowned out!. Everything is lost, and a Second Coming is thus necessary to correct the world!.
The “vast image out of spiritus mundi” is the large sphinx that represents the human subconscious!. It is full of emptiness and it is pitiless because it has been awakened by the problems of the world!. It “slouches towards Bethlehem to be born” (22) because it will come again to rectify these problems!. Significantly, it has slept for twenty centuries, or 2000 years!. It went to sleep at around the time Christ was born in Jerusalem, and thus, it will also be born in Jerusalem!. A second coming is sure to happen, as implied by line twenty, when Yeats says “its hour come round at last!.”Www@QuestionHome@Com
