Poetry is "the ability to shart and write about it" without saying the words poop, shittt or shart!.!.!.!.!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think what you say is the case!. Poetry accommodates a variety of emotions and ideas, not all of them self-pitying, not even most of the greatest self-pitying!. Is William Blake's poetry ("London," "The Tyger") emotionally self-indulgent!? Is Yeats's "Among School Children" a whine!? Would you make such claims for the poems of Keats!? For E!. E!. Cummings!? For W!. H!. Auden!? For Wallace Stevens!? For writers of comic light verse like Ogden Nash!? For Alexander Pope!? For Shakespeare's sonnets!? "The thoughts that lie too deep for tears," as Wordsworth puts it, do not lead to crying!.

I think either you have been mislead or misapprehend about how to read poetry--really it's more about language and form, about rhythm and technique--than about "content!." As Auden put it when young, "The subject of the poem is only the peg on which it is hung!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

poets don't expect people who read their poems to cry and sympathize with them!. Poets don't "whine" about how miserable their lives are!. And life is not pathetic!.

Poems exist for expression!. For putting down in words how you feel about something at the time!. It is a literary memory of what you experienced in a moment in time!. The "point" is to express yourself!. Sometimes it doesn't even matter if you're heard!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My old english teacher and school literary magazine "editor" said it best: You don't typically go and write a poem right when you get a new girl/boyfriend, when you get engaged, when you do good on a test, when you're happy!. Typically, you use poetry as a way to get out your emotions, as a type of therapy, and most of the time it's when you're depressed, or angry, etc that you feel the need to blow off some steam and just let it all out!. Some people use music to do this, some people work their a$$es off and stress, some people write, others play sports, blog, or just tell everyone in their lives about it!.
Everyone handles emotions differently, and some people write their emotions away!.
Think about it: if your life was amazing, and you were always happy, would you go to a therapist or psychologist or whatever, or would you go see them if you were having problems with things in life and was depressed!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is no single point to poetry!. It is a manner of self-expression, like music or art on canvas!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
