The Captains voice wafts through the cabin
The altitude is 2700 feet and we will touch down in 35 minutes
We have left behind the blinking lights of the big city
Appearing as a shining field of jewels and gems blinking randomly
Settling in puzzle book in hand, my seatmate looks intently at the page
Inquisitive, she tries to help me as methodically and slow
I work on the puzzles, my slowness signalling my age
Ambiguity settles in my brain, I hand her the book and pencil
I am amazed as we speak that her English is as good as it is
I speak only brokenly bits and pieces of other languages
Her Chinese accent makes it harder to understand
But her grasp of English and her use of it immediately engages
In China as children still in baby stages are learning to speak
English she says is much easier to learn than her native Chinese
She tells me I should visit China, It is a beautiful place
Yet I fear the idea, having only one language in my arsenal!.
Captivated by confinement to the tiny seats of the aircraft
East meets west, idle curiosity causes them to exchange morsels
Information processed but of little importance at the time,
Yet memorable in context to being alone with ones thoughts
