Question: When does a poet need better words!?
Another poem from The Best American Poetry 2007!. Was there ever a time you needed better words!?

Initiation
by Forrest Hamer
(orig!. pub!. in The American Poetry Review)

After I stumbled through the gauntlet, after they had ht me
As hard as they could,
Some there only because there was somebody else
To be brought in, I joined them
In greeting the new ones, the frightened and longing ones,
And I punched as hard and as much as I could, something
Filling in me I would tell you was a thrill
Only because I had no better word for it!.
There was another word for violence
Made my mother impatient with me, she would call me evil,
And I knew what she was trying to talk to me about--
How much I hated,
How much I wanted and how greedy wanting made me!.
What I wanted most were better words!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My brief answer would be, all the time!.

It’s easier to verbalize thoughts in conversation or writing with better vocabulary skills!. To use words coherently, as a mighty weapon, in fact, might lessen the need for some to use physical violence!.

I assume a linguistic scholar has little difficulty verbalizing thoughts adequately and effectively in conversation or writing!. I wonder if this doesn’t make the linguistic feel better vented, even though the vast majority of us would little understand his or her terminology!.

It seems for me word study is ongoing!. However, I love words and just for self-expression in my writings, to be a master artisan of words would be awesome!. Yet, somewhere in my brain I'm still trying to find that hidden capacity to retain!. I’m just thankful for my dictionary and thesaurus!.

I try to teach my son good verbal ripostes to use instead of his fists and he tells me it feels better that way!. Mind you, he just got his black belt in TaeKwonDo so I think he's ok either way! Lol!

Better words are the most fun you can have together or alone because of what they lead to!.

Running the gauntlet is a bully's charter, been there, copped it, dropped 'em!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I just returned from somewhere !.!.!.

Anyway reading and learning about poetry from a few people here or "there" would be cool!. I try to "do it" on my own surfing about the web, but easily get distracted by the Win A Yahoo Vacation pop-ups!.

And yes, I do believe we all need better words!. However, I posted a few "good ones" yesterday and they were terribly too archaic!.!.!.like on the endangered list, so says Collin's!.

The first thing that comes to mind when reading this is hazing, but that's just me!.
To answer your question, In the past several months I find myself constantly searching for "better" words, both in writing and in conversation!. I suppose that's a good thing, but in the circles I travel!.!.!.Well, there are only so many words for dust!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Needs a lot more concrete images, but the meaning is there!. Kind of liked this one!.!.!.story about life, in general, it seems!.
Better than the rest of these, you've been posting from that book!.!.!.any better ones!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I liked this very much!. Most of my words get little stars in place of them!. Like when I say, ****,***, ****, !. See, I told you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

And the words where spoken
and the others just laughed!.
A pummeling, a whipping
and my own hand to blame!.
Now better words I seek!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I always desire better words!. Thank you, Elaine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Here, now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with Reemie, this is about hazing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yeah, as my two friends above, I'd call it Bastardization!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I thought the book said poetry was fictional!. Those girls, they hit hard!.

I actually ran the gauntlet twice!. After the first time, someone who hated me made my records go away so that when it came time again, I had no proof and was forced through a second time!. The guy who hit the hardest was the one who'd tampered with my records!. I stood up, for a few seconds, and thought about feeding him to the sharks!. I didn't want to go to jail over such a low person!. I would save that honor for much more lofty ideals!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
