Question: When exactly are you sure what you are reading is probably a poem!?
4!.1!.1!. Outward Indications

In addition, there are a number of outward signs that indicate a poem: Most obviously, the individual text lines in poetry do not fill the entire width of the page!. Thus, before they have actually started reading, readers of poetry are given an instant indication that what they are going to read is probably a poem!. In consequence, a reader’s attention is likely to focus on ‘poetic features’ of the text!.

And what of the prose poem or lyric essay; what of Walt Whitman!? Surely it has more to do with the ways that language is used, the rhetorical figures, density of figurative language and ornaments, the regular musicality of the phrasing (even in the absence of rhyme or line breaks), the effect that it has on you, the reader, in total!. In another age, perhaps the structure of short lines was an indicator, but that age of simple attribution is largely past!. Many pieces of writing conventionally arranged on a page are not poetry because they lack the aforementioned features, indeed the sheer lexical density of poetry, a special language where words mean double, where cadence itself induces a sort of trance of ecstatic transport, where language is being used in a way that shifts consciousness!. When I see these things then, and only then, do I know I'm reading poetry, and not just words arranged on a piece of paper!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I consider myself a poet
But just breaking up the lines doesn't
Make what I write poetry!.
What I write about doesn't
make it poetry either!.
At least not to me!.

Poetry flows!. The words flow together as if they were meant to be in this configuration, and the transition from line to line is such that the voice doesn't get choppy and falter!. A poem has many qualities that I am probably unaware, but I know what sounds good to me when I read it, and to me that makes it poetry!. Nothing I have written here do I consider poetic, no matter the word or line formation, for when I read them, I do not hear poetry, just words!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A difficult question to me!.!.!.!. nowadays, form does not mean anything, except to formalists!. A "poem" is not necessarily "poetry" and "poetry" does not necessarily take the form of a poem!.
Soooooo!.!.!.!.!.!.poetry is a language more than anything else!. But what language!? Poetry is not necessarily metaphorical (that would also be an archaic vision, no!?)!. Does it have to do with orality!? Poetry meant to be read aloud!? While prose should be read for oneself!?

Maybe!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well said, that is
Exactly what I believe
To be the first
And true sign
Of a poem!.

I mean: Well said, that is exactly what I believe to be the first and true sign of a poem!.

I often write in standard prose form to get things rolling, and then break it in to line segments!. Lines are to poetry what bars are to music!.

(I'm still trying to figure out the discussion forum!. I guess I'll have to email, but that's like joining a book club and having to call your opinions in, without an intercom, even!. I'll send something as soon as I compose something that makes it seem like I know what I'm talking about!. If'n that's okay!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm sure that it is a poem if I get through reading it and I actually gave a sh*t about what it said!.
And breaking up lines might make me care!.
And having feet might make me care!.
And punching me in the teeth might make me care!.
And caring might make me care!.
And!.
And when night rhymes with light it might make me care!.
And if you use the phrase "sweet Rose kisses" it might make me care!.
And if you write the word "BLOOD" and that is all, it might make me care!.
And!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You know how I love rhyme and time
Outward form and imagery
A poem draws me and attacks my senses
Beginning with the line
A poet does not a poem make
Neither does the poem make the poet
A word,
Absurd!
Too much
Of such
It may clue
But what else does it do!?
I will look,
But is there a hook!?
Prose may be poetic
Or poetry prosaic
If there are outward indications,
Are there inward inclinations!?

DMag, Ma, Dondi, CS, and Mixtli are right, as is Annabelle, Are we listening to the same music!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

When the writer is a poet!. Regardless of the verse format/structure, the words 'd exert his/ her poetic nature!. However, the followed scheme of word-arrangement and/or punctuation has an impact on the flow of the rhythm, and the sequence of promoted images!.That is, it may make the verse's bells ring louder or dimmer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm exactly sure whenever I'm in Doubt!. Oxymoronic of me I know!.

Sometimes written words are determined as Poetry years after they appear, or due to unusual social circumstances etc!.etc!.

In the 1960's a single misspelled word was deemed a Poem worthy of Two Nat!. Endowment of the Arts Awards!.!.!.!.!. simply because it raised eyebrows and forced people to SEE as opposed to read!.

I suspect it's a poem when it sings, there are a few novelists who write poetically, but their works are not poetry!. The form is not the poem, but is a part of it!.The poem, at least for me, is the content, the emotion evoked!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I wanted to say what DMag said, but didn't have the guts to,
so now I'm hiding under him for protection!!!!

Roses

Hello friends its roses again,
Roses all the way,
Only will roses ever stay,
Upon your coat button and as flowers
In a vase and ‘ Roses’ as a name for you
And then someone will say,
Roses are red
Violets are blue,
Call a rose by any other name
Still I t’ ll be true!.

Roses will remain the way they are,
Their smell travels very far,
From London to Australia
Or the bottom of the sea,
Where Jack Dawson was said to be born free!.

Had there been no Titanic there would
Have been no’ Rose’,
also no ‘Hello Canada’, to compose,
Yes my friend would have to say
‘’Why do I have to wear clothes’’ today!.

Another of my fans ‘Hassan’ would have no romance,
Without a Rose,’ Hello Canada’, would have no stance!.
Kroshta, or Cleopatra yes, Greek woman,
Any other person, American may be Roman,
Nor Solitaire would have been,
On the internet ever seen!.

For roses sure are red and violets are still blue,
My love for Canada is, as much it is for you!.
Roses will sell the way they usually do!.
Hopefully you all will display
when’ Hello’ does go,
‘’Gone With The Wind’’, He hopes so,
And does every remind,
Sweet memories of roses
He would leave behind!.

Roses are red and always will be
Beautiful flowers for you and me,
Let heavens strip dead,
But roses will always ,always be red!.
