Question: Do you think every boy should ask consent to marry!?
Intrusivosity With A Doubt posted a question about like, which brought back memories, and prompted this short write

The Question

The father's blessing must be had,
To wed his daughter fair!.
The boy must ask for his consent,
His heart he must lay bare!.

I walked in to the place he sat,
So brave and also bold!.
I felt my heart beat in my chest,
My palms were sweating cold!.

"Sir", I said with cracking voice,
"I love your daughter so,
And I would like to marry her,
I hope you won't say no"!.

His gaze on me I still can feel,
His eyes were steely blue!.
"Do you like her!?" he then said,
I said, "I love her true"

"I know you have a heart of love,
But if you like her not!.
The road will be a rocky one,
The bed will not stay hot"!.

"Yes Sir!. I like her", my reply,
As long as I shall live!.
"Then take her son, to be your wife,
My blessing will I give"!.

Nice poem -it reminds me of my father & grandfather!.
I think it's part of what separates a man from a boy, though!.
My parents married in their late 20s, which was late for that generation!. When my father asked my grandfather's permission, my grandfather replied, "Son, thank God you asked -I thought I was going to have to sell raffle tickets"!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Very wise words!. For without the - to like - longevity may be lost!. This custom surely has its finer points - to know the future child-in-law - adds greatly to family cohesiveness - or at least - a forewarning of what pitfalls may follow!. I doubt - if a denial of a parent's blessing - will hold water with today's young!. However - a reversal to day's past - is not always bad ?Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's not mandatory, but it scores you points with her father!. I did before I popped the question and it was the wise thing to do!. If there were issues, this gives him an open invitation to welcome you or tell you to hit the road!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Absolutely Beautiful!.
If that was said to me for my daughters hand in marriage, I think I would love my future son -n- law forever for those words alone!.
In todays society, those virtues dont exist too much anymore,unfortunately!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
