Question: Please analyzed this poem "Candles" by Danton R!.Remoto!?
Candles melt
the hard darkness
inside the church!.
Smoke thinner
than thread quivers
to the Mother of Perpetual Help!.

May the Holy Mother Smell
a father's shirt
beaded with debts,
lines skill-deep
on a mother's forehead,
children with violated dreams---

The tears
of a country
that seems to have fun
out of candles to burn!.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Candles melt
the hard darkness

Metaphor - Darkness as a solid substance, I can't remember what it is called, but the line "Candles melt" on its own makes sense, in reference to the wax of the candle, but is transformed by the next line into the melting of the darkness

inside the church!.
Smoke thinner
than thread quivers
to the Mother of Perpetual Help!.

Mother of perpetual help -= Mary, mother of Jesus!. In Catholic, and some other sects within Christianity venerate Mary almost as much ( if not more) than Jesus or God and prayers of intercession are addressed through the Holy Mother!. "Smoke thinner!.!.!." gives an image of tenuous prayers ascending

May the Holy Mother Smell

A curious line break makes us think the line is an insult (especially if your capitalisation is correct)

a father's shirt
beaded with debts,

Indirect imagery, The smell of sweat, due to hard labour, ironically the smell of debt and poverty

lines skill-deep
on a mother's forehead,

!?!?should this read, "lines *skull* deep"!?!? Lines of worry on the woman's forehead!. The exaggerated imagery, 'skull deep' and also possibly the cultural association of the skull with death reinforce this imagery

children with violated dreams---

Fairly self explanatory!.
-- all of these above are kimages of real hardship and pain to be presented in prayer for intercession!.

The tears
of a country
that seems to have fun
out of candles to burn!.

The last section questions whether the votive candles burnt as offerings (and metaphorically, prayer itself) is a proper response to the real-world misery of poverty, worry and abuse!?
