Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone!?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream!.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp!?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave!?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream!?

Edgar Allan Poe

I think this poem basically means how one dreams!.!.everyday, and the dreams keep comming everyday!.!.and one day we die and another life starts and we dream again!.!.the dreams keep comming!.!.sometimes we cannot hold onto things forever and that is what he describes in this poem!.

Edit: he basically means that in whole the life is a dream, when we die, we wont be able to remember what had happened in our previous life!.!.it would be like a nother dream that went by!.!.and then another new dream will appear!.!.when he talks about the sand!.!.that is going slowing away from his hands!.!.he is talking aobut the possesions in this life!.!.we cannot take w/ us for long!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

"A Dream Within a Dream" reflects Poe's feelings about his life at the time, dramatizing his confusion in watching the few precious things in his life slip away!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
