Metaphysical poetry is poetry that is philosophical, abstract, appeals to the intellect rather than the emotions!. It usually deals with themes related to existence, being, time, God, ideas/intellect!. May be theological!. Emily Dickinson, Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, Wallace Stevens explore metaphysical issues!. So does TS Eliot (altho he was also British)!. Examples of metaphysical poems are:

Dickinson (1860s)
