Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold!.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour!.
Then leaf subsides to leaf!.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day!.
Nothing gold can stay!.

Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold

- I think the author is using the plant as a general statement about life (the miracle of birth and how fast our youth - in particular the beauty and purity of the seedling (baby) as a infant passes!. The seed leaves sprout from the seed - a beautiful fresh yellow green colour not seen in the older plant)

Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour!.

--A flower is beautiful!. Have you ever seen a baby of any species that was not beautiful (or at lest extremely cute) and how short the time of being a baby compared to the rest of our life!. We are only a baby for a year while we are toddlers for about three years then children for a longer period and teenagers for about ten years so babyhood is our shortest stage!.

Then leaf subsides to leaf!.
So Eden sank to grief,

-The seed leaves turn into the true leaves (the baby becomes a toddler , gaining a small measure of independence (not using Mother's milk any longer or using the soil as nourishment instead of the contents of the seed in the case of the seedling) Changing form into what more closely resembles the adult it will become!. Mother (or mother nature in the case of the seed) is a little sadder as to see her little one growing up so fast !.

So dawn goes down to day!.
Nothing gold can stay

- Our life path and that of the seedling progesses on (baby to toddler and eventually elder) as does the day progress on from dawn (the birth of the day) to day to eventually arrive at dusk) - nothing can stay so pure and fresh as at the period of baby!. How often have you heard the Mother of a young one lament the pace of growth during this period e!.g!. My baby is not a baby any more or why can't they stay babies longer)

Synopsis - When we (plants, animals, persons) are born we are a pure little miracle - fresh from heaven and the arms of the angels - This is the shortest period of life!. Now on earth we start the journey toward our end

Sorry that the answer was so long!.

I believe that this poem is like a look at life!. When your a child you love life and the people around it, but nobody will stay a child forever; Her early leafs a flower, but only so an hour; but then the rest of your life isn't a pain but its not gold like your childhood; So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day; which means that life goes by in time but death will always follow you because you cannot run away from death!.

It's an allusion to spring time!. Just as spring comes and everything is in bloom and the flowers start to bloom and the trees start budding and the weather is perfect!.

But in nature spring can't stay forever, it changes into summer, then fall then winter!.

So too in a persons life, if they are having a "golden" time now in your life and everything is going well for you, that time can not stay forever!. Change is inevitable!. Since change is inevitable it is better to embrace that change than to fight to keep things always as they are now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

this brings me back to drama school
hehe
right here is what i think it means (ill put it by line)

Nature's first green is gold - all natural its beautiful in its own way

Her hardest hue to hold!. - its made to survive

Her early leaf's a flower; - on the early stages of its like its sweet and delicat just like a flower

But only so an hour!. - soon they become not so delicatand have to get stronger or smarter to survive

Then leaf subsides to leaf!. - then u can see clearly what its there for rather than what it looked like

So Eden sank to grief, - Eden is the goddes of harvest (i think) so i think this must mean that one day, very soon, its live it comming to an end

So dawn goes down to day!. - its time has come!.!.

Nothing gold can stay!. - !.!.!.and so its beauty, once so presiuse, its no longer there

now thats what what i think of it
of course everyone has its own opinion on it
but still!. i hope it helped youWww@QuestionHome@Com

It's about how the most beautiful things in life are temporary!.

He is using an analogy of 'gold' to mean 'perfect'!. There are 3 examples of ideal things fading away in this poem: 'nature's first green', 'Eden', and 'dawn'!.
