Wisdom Comes With Age

Rose declared to me that night that wisdom comes with age
and my advancing years should bring no fear!.
But now, in doubt and shame, I pass another wasted day
and in self-pity, waste another year!.

I sometimes sit at home alone because I’m conscious of
my old and introverted self!. I find
when everybody gravitates into their little cliques
I’m usually the only one in mine!

I reinforce my insecurities by dwelling on
these things!. I see the young and pretty ones
and in my lonely heart, and in my body, agonize
because I know that I’m no longer young

or anything approaching handsome!. Thinking of a time
when I was the life of every party;
I mourn those times; I know that they have long-since passed away
into the misty realm of memory!.

And she, whose eyes, uncharmed by any pretense of desire,
look upon me, if they look at all,
with a fleeting and indifferent glance, politely nods
and passes, barely noticing!. This small

and subtle gesture of superiority could not
have hurt me more!. I’ve lost the fight; I’ve slain
my final dragon!. Tired and bitter, I must be resigned
to celibacy, solitude and pain!.
