Question: Are we programmed by our language to see things in a certain way!?
I came across this delightful little Scottish limerick and it set me thinking!. Read it and see what you think!.

A lively young damsel named Menzies
Inquired "Do you know what this thenzies!?"
Her aunt with a gasp
Replied " It's a wasp!
And you're holding the end where the stenzies!"

Now is the point where I let you know that in Scotland the name Menzies is pronounced Mingies!. Go back and read it again!.
Discuss!.
Lol!.

I love the idiosyncratic pronounciation of some words, usually names
eg Mainwaring - pronounced Mannering, Cholmondley p!. Chumley, Grosvenor p!. Grov'ner, Althorp p!. Althrup, Beauchamp p!. Beacham, Belvoir p!. Beaver and the best of all !.!.!.!.
Featherstonehaugh p!. Fanshaw!.!.!.!.I love these even when I suspect they are that way because the snobbish upper classes in Merry old England made them that way so that they could weasel out any nouveau riche person from high society!.
A long time ago - Dionne Warwick was coming to UK, all the media referred to her as Dionne Warrick - our pronounciation - she soon put us right!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I believe it goes even deeper!. When we hear music we often sing songs with words we perceive, upon first hearing them!.!.!. the words will be different than the lyrics

There was a song "Poetry In Motion" that I went around singing "oh a tree in motion!." There were many more but that one sticks in my mind!.!.!. seemed like a silly mistake then but today I find myself putting trees in motion with words!. Now I know it was not I that got the lyrics wrong!.

autumn turns to winter
with the coming
of harsh winds,
driving trees
backwards and forward
with branches swaying,
limbs undressed,
leaves, stripped
and falling all around,
it is a dance
and autumn follows
as winter takes the lead

and I watch in wonderment
as I see!.!.!.
oh, a tree in motion!.

I think I got off on a tangent but I understand what you are saying!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Now, as a Scot living in England these past 28 years, I didn't need to read it twice!. However, when I left Loch Lomond all those years ago, I can assure you we pronounced it as written, not the "Mingis"way!. I asked my cousin and a few others from the Glasgow district, who all agreed with me!. In fact, they said that this alternative pronunciation, was invented as a joke but has come into normal usage!. Ach well, ye live and learn, sometimes!.!.!.!.;?)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Its not as much as the language as it is our culture, we was raised by our parents and their believes, as they was raised by their parents, what they was raised in makes a big differents on how they look at things!. give you an example my mother has been living with me for about 10 yrs now and she is 67 yrs!. when she talks she uses words that I have never heard of sometimes, I don't correct her because I think its neat!. We can learn alot from different cultures if we just take the time to listenWww@QuestionHome@Com
