Question: It was just a matter of time, can you relate!?

The first poem is of the type I grew up forced to read, and it put me off for a long while!.
The second poem is of the type I stumbled upon, and it opened up everything!.
Did you have a moment when you knew!?

Afternoon on a Hill

I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one!.

I will look at cliffs and clouds
With quiet eyes,
Watch the wind bow down the grass,
And the grass rise!.

And when lights begin to show
Up from the town,
I will mark which must be mine,
And then start down!

Edna St!. Vincent Millay

Pull A String, A Puppet Moves

each man must realize
that it can all disappear very
quickly:
the cat, the woman, the job,
the front tire,
the bed, the walls, the
room; all our necessities
including love,
rest on foundations of sand -
and any given cause,
no matter how unrelated:
the death of a boy in Hong Kong
or a blizzard in Omaha !.!.!.
can serve as your undoing!.
all your chinaware crashing to the
kitchen floor, your girl will enter
and you'll be standing, drunk,
in the center of it and she'll ask:
my god, what's the matter!?
and you'll answer: I don't know,
I don't know !.!.!.

I learned to read at age 5!. My father taught me using Robert Louis Stevenson's book, "A child's Garden of verses"!. This is the type I learned, and still enjoy!. My favorite was "The Land of Counterpane"

When I was sick and lay a-bed,
I had two pillows at my head,
And all my toys beside me lay,
To keep me happy all the day!.

And sometimes for an hour or so
I watched my leaden soldiers go,
With different uniforms and drills,
Among the bed-clothes, through the hills;

And sometimes sent my ships in fleets
All up and down among the sheets;
Or brought my trees and houses out,
And planted cities all about!.

I was the giant great and still
That sits upon the pillow-hill,
And sees before him, dale and plain,
The pleasant land of counterpane!.

Mine was sort of the opposite!. They never mentioned poetry when I was in school!. For me poets were Jim Morrison, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Dylan, Donovan, and the like!. Then Lord Byron's poem Darkness added to all that!.
I don't subscribe to the notion that poetry has to be of classical form, or any form for that matter!. But just like what's going on in the music industry, poetry seems to be headed towards rap with a capital C!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I never really had an epiphany as such, more a long, slow rush, like when you parachute and as you get near to the ground and, previously far below, it comes up and MEETS you!.

It's possible that Tom Waits' lyrics in the early 70's were a major influence!.

I love all sorts of poems!. Just a trollop at heart!.

I used to write poetry when I was younger, but lost something along the way!. I guess everything was a crisis, a major event back then!. I have never really had the opportunity to look into anyone Else's work, I would like to someday!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.somedayWww@QuestionHome@Com

Pattern structure and form have their place,but freestyle opens the doors wide!.I've picked up the pieces shattered too,Bukowski knew a lot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The first poem i had to learn and recite was "the road less traveled!." that was a very good poem to learn from!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

hey buk you rock as always yes i knew Hugs Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes there is a big difference!. Although I don't exactly agree with the second poem I like it anyway!. That is what happened to the people in the tidal waves and hurricanes!. I guess if I thought like that I would be glad when it did go ahead and happen just to get it over with!. Do you think that dirty dishes could crash to the floor instead!? There is something about that I think it is from the bible that says if you build a house on the sand when the storm comes it will be lost but if you build it on the rock ,a good foundation it will stand through the storms!. There probably are some things built on sand and I will just as soon they do wash away in a storm if that is the case!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This is the one, Buk!. First poem that I ever
read and said "that's fooking cool!"
--------------------------------------!.!.!.

by Algernon Charles Swinburne

Before the beginning of years

There came to the making of man

Time, with a gift of tears;

Grief, with a glass that ran;

Pleasure, with pain for leaven;

Summer, with flowers that fell;

Remembrance, fallen from heaven,

And madness risen from hell;

Strength without hands to smite;

Love that endures for a breath;

Night, the shadow of light,

And life, the shadow of death!.

And the high gods took in hand

Fire, and the falling of tears,

And a measure of sliding sand

From under the feet of the years;

And froth and the drift of the sea;

And dust of the laboring earth;

And bodies of things to be

In the houses of death and of birth;

And wrought with weeping and laughter,

And fashioned with loathing and love,

With life before and after

And death beneath and above,

For a day and a night and a morrow,

That his strength might endure for a span

With travail and heavy sorrow,

The holy spirit of man!.

From the winds of the north and the south,

They gathered as unto strife;

They breathed upon his mouth,

They filled his body with life;

Eyesight and speech they wrought

For the veils of the soul therein,

A time for labor and thought,

A time to serve and to sin;

They gave him light in his ways,

And love, and space for delight,

And beauty, and length of days,

And night, and sleep in the night!.

His speech is a burning fire;

With his lips he travaileth;

In his heart is a blind desire,

In his eyes foreknowledge of death;

He weaves, and is clothed with derision;

Sows, and he shall not reap;

His life is a watch or a vision

Between a sleep and a sleep!.

In school, I actually enjoyed the structure of the classics and I still do today!. I'm drawn to structure, rhythm, and rhyme, but I also like a very good free form or free verse as long as it contains some sort of poetic device!. Actually, I didn't realize how much I would enjoy free verse until I found Y!A poetry and the exceptional poets who practice this style!. Anyhow, the poet who did it for me when I was in school was Poe, then Shakespeare, then Dante!.!.!.and many others who I did not learn about until college!. I love poetry in all forms and most genres!. I think both of these poems are wonderful!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, was raised on the first style, studied them hard to get straight A's, then left them behind me, the struggle to understand and memorize done!. Poetry class closed!.

Then, 4 decades later, I met you and read your postings in poetry and Shazzam! I felt an awakening deep within, then a sense of urgency to spill stuff out as you had shown and encouraged me to do!.

It has been a life changer and a life saver for me to have met you and through you, The Buk's style of poetry!.
