Question: What say you to When Sanity Flees, We Go In !?
Four o’clock, cold winter’s morning,
pager beeping, strident shrill tones!.
Needed sleep, all vestige vanquished!.

Thinking, no longer required, practice kicks in,
donning gear without a moments hesitation!.
Heading out, left the family sleeping on!.

Bright red trucks, riding out, into the night,
sirens screaming, echoing from trees and cloud!.
Adrenalin focuses the brain, eyes once sandman fuzzy!.

Narrow country roads winding, steep and slick,
on scene, quickly from the truck, sizing up!.
This old house, a guaranteed challenge!.

Voices ringing out, chilling your brain,
dreaded words, “My baby girl is in there!”
Masks on, lines charged, entry thru burning door!.

On hands and knees crawling, can’t see the floor,
silent prayers said, searching room to room!.
Dear Lord, this baby shouldn’t die so soon!.

Under bed, gasping, small soot covered face,
rushing out, this life now cradled in arms, no panic!.
Dedicated medics smile, knowing, our crew saved one!.

Fire soon extinguished, only acrid fuming ashes lingering,
back in station, work to do, dreading yet another call!.
Hours of training, seeking, striving, for excellence!.

Help for our neighbors when down and out,
neither gloating, nor standing above the rest!.
Volunteer firefighters is how we are known!.

The Fire Brigade is the one career I didn't consider after talking to a friend in the service who had just come back from a shout where they pulled three children and their mother from a building too late!. At least in the army you can shoot back at your enemy!.
