I Don't expect anything to happen!.
I Just know instantly if the words are going to have true emotional meaning, humour, or a touch of sarcasm!.
I Love all poetry,and enjoy all forms of techniques used!.
Some times if a Poem relates to my self, I easily become self absorbed!.
Therefore A True Poem to me is one that can be read over and over without a seconds boredom or lack of concentration!. Most of them shared on this site are truly beautifully pieced together!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As I read the words, I expect a video in my mind showing me pictures of what I am reading, and I expect the words to flow easily from one to the next, and from line to line, so that the video isn't interrupted, and keeps playing smoothly thru to the end!. The best ones to me carry a simple story topside with multiple meanings underneath!. As I grow older I find I have less tolerance for really asbstract images and metaphors!. I often wonder if, like a lot of song lyrics, that the poet just threw the words together for meter sound!.

Overall, engage me, give me but a phrase to remember that is memorable and please, unless you are Whitman, don't write a book and call it a poem!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I want my senses to be touched!. I want to say, "Ah ha!" when I have finished!. Or I want it to be so clear that I am in the scene, I can smell the aroma of bread baking (if that is in the poem); I want to laugh because it is unexpected; I want to cry because it wrenches my heart!. I want to see words crafted into a new way, such as unique rhymes and new words (to me, perhaps)!.

I remember one in which the word "fell" used an archaic meaning and it made the poem stronger; I had to look through the dictionary meanings to realize what fell meant in the poem, and I love that!.

I want the rhythm to be so clear that I hear the tinkling of bells or the buzzing of bees or the chirping of birds!. Birdsong is beautiful; the Chinese story of The Nightingale does creates wonder such as this!.

In all, I want it to make a difference in how I think about something!. I like my poem "Gangsta Girl" because (to me) it reveals a side of sorrow that I never realized until I saw a special about it; then I weeped, and then I wrote!.

For a serious subject I want to be delighted by the interesting use of language, be intriqued by the subject and be motivated to write something of my own!. But, I would be satisfied with only one of these!.
In a light-hearted subject, I expect to be amused and entertained!.

I want a visceral reaction!. The intellect comes afterwards!. If I cannot FEEL the poem, it means little to me!. Then I want the poem to contain some mystery, so that I can think about it, some imagery to paint a canvas for me, some meter, so that I may sing with it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sure, a poem can trigger emotion but, I look for the element that makes it memorable!. Whether it be merely a word or a phrase!. I ask myself, what will make someone remember this!? Www@QuestionHome@Com
