Drugs probably, but if you look to his music, you could decipher that he was looking for Love, not lovin', but love!.
Drugs like pot put you into a state of mind where your thoughts are cleared and thinking becomes easy!. This would suggest that many of his poems and songs came to him from thinking, with some help from drugs!.

Well he went to college and read the poetic work's of william blake and I am sure the influences of psychedelic compound's gave rise to some of the imagery And poetic guise that made up his song's along with the turmoil of the sixties the love, violence, and the thought of being free!.
All this along with other people that were trying to create a new way of life and change from the old way's of a generation considered bound in ignorance!.
So what I am saying here is it was a combination of everything Schooling to Drug's to the Times that made Jim Morrison's poem's considered great!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
