Question: Why do so many people on this sight who write "poetry" so obviously NOT read any poetry!?
Is it not true that talent improves from studying the talent of others!? I'd like to know how many people who post their poems for critique actually have read a published poem recently -- either a famous and traditional one or one in the myriad of modern journals, either paper or on-line!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I guess it might be that some feel that to write a poem is something easy !!?! and all all it is to it is to write about something romantic or maybe tragic & just slep a few sentences in that sound passionate and might rhyme then the cat's in the bag ! !? ! lol and that's all to it ! !? ! !. ;-c rRrWww@QuestionHome@Com

I posted 3 of my poems just to know if they like it!.
I usually read poems and I have been inspired and I appreciate every word of it, but i don't like to study their techniques and their work because everyone has their own technique and originality!. I remember a famous poet saying "Inspirations and a widely opened mind will let you write an amazing poem"!.!.!.

Have a nice day!:) Www@QuestionHome@Com

well, my dear!.
the traditional poetry you are talking about & the recently published, all goes back to a single poet!. all these people have been looking back at previous poetry!. all but that one poet, that started it all!. maybe that's what we're trying to imitate when we DON'T imitate their writing style!. maybe what we're imitating is their mindset, so that we get the same result, but in our own, unique style!.

maybe, YOU'RE idea of "correct" poetry means looking back, and writing off of reference!. but mine is about letting out what i have in MY way!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I read, write, critique, edit and publish!.

I learn the most from reading others and critiquing!.

We who take the time to read and provide insight are the ones who are blessed and will make our muses happy so they will keep us happy!

I know what you mean!. It seems like everyone and their cousin can write "poetry" these days!. also, what do they hope for when they put it in Y/A for critiquing!? Perhaps an agent is lurking here!? Give me a break!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Everybody wants to be a poet!.!.!.but no one wants to take the time to read!. We are doomed to a poetry world of "I love you gurl!.!.!.please be in my wurld!.!.!.!.!.!.I'll be the nuts and you'll be the squerrlllll" Sad times indeed!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because these amateurs think anyone who can write words on a page can write poetry!. It's an art, takes practice and studying techniques and the works of others!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For better or worse, here's my take, this is just a summary of observations from spending time reading, both here and elsewhere!.

I agree, poetry, as with any art form needs to be read and studied; not so much to copy another's style, but to also learn what you like and dislike about the art of penning verse!. By reading you can also learn what works and what just does not work!. That is a lot of effort in any case, a lot of time expended from a society who has little or no patience with expending time!.

Poetry is perceived by many as a simple and easy "art form", if it is even understood to be an art form at all, with sets of rules being incredibly vague!. After all, this is "only" words set down, everyone has a simple, basic knowledge of words!. In our current society we presume someone else will know exactly what is being said with our simple, easy to understand word usage!.

Heck, "everyone" knows about texting and IM's, thus "everyone" is able to grasp what you are saying with all the short cuts involved there!. If you believe "everyone" understands texting being the result of technology, rather than laziness, then it is a given that "everyone" will appreciate your effort when you use full words; after all you just put forth the effort!.

Rhymes are no longer required to be considered an adept writer of poetry A rhythm is something that is meant for music played on instruments, not something to be incorporated into words of a poem!.

What passes as a poem, both published and unpublished, can be anything from a rambling string of thoughts to an emotional stirring, to a delicate or intense mental picture!. Inflame a mind with passion !? Paint a picture with words !? Why bother !? That's too much like work!. It's far easier to lay down some thoughts with simple easy to understand words that vaguely touch on a subject!.

Having offered my rant, I'll answer your other question!. I have submitted a few pieces looking for comments,,, I also have read quite a lot, though I have not sudied as much as I should have!. I am a novice, I know it, I am open to learning!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
