I don't believe that 'kewl' is an abbreviation, as much as it is just slang, or just pure laziness!. It's another way to say 'cool' and other ways include:

cewl
coooooooool
etc!.''

It's just a way for people to ignore proper lanuguage, and be sloppy!.
