Question: Did we lose something when churches went casual!?
Sunday Hats
by Cynthia S!.

I watch ladies of the church
assemble at the door!.
Stand quietly, in low tones,
speak to each other
before services start!.
Different from all other days
when in disguise they
walk among us!.
On Sundays, with raiment glowing,
far more polished than pressed,
they adorn themselves!.
Hats reveal their true nature,
diadems
of feathers, veils or flowers!.
Royal Princesses,
Daughters of the King!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Oh, very well answered, Robert!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the "when in disguise they" line!. It doesn't seem to flow!.

On top of that!.!.!. I dunno, I don't think clothes make the man (or woman), so I guess it clashes with my personal philosophy (and lack of belief, but who's counting, right!?)!.

Seems like "speak to each other" should either be "speaking" or "they speak"!.

!.!.!.

Coming from a church where there was an expected dress code (white shirts, ties, slacks, dress shoes for the guys, modest dresses for the women) I can't really say that I was a big fan of it!. I left the Mormon church years ago, but I remember one time when I went back with my sister!.!.!. I was the only one in the church with a non-white shirt (it was a tan polo), I was the only one not wearing black or grey slacks (I was wearing brown I think), the only one with facial hair, and the only one besides the bishop who was bald (I shave my head)!. I don't think I have ever felt so out of place in my life!.

So maybe dressing up for church isn't always such a good thing, y'know!? I mean, the earliest christians didn't dress up or wear funny hats - they met as equals (oh yes, I've done my research)!.

Anyways, that is a little off topic, but I feel that it pertains to the poem as far as the subject of whether we've lost some dignity by going casual!.

It's a mixed bag, I think!. I think that a woman, whether old or young, has the right to be as glorious as they want to be!.!.!.!. I kinda think that many of these wonderful old ladies are beautiful regardless!.!.!.!. Wow, I'm not sure I know what I think anymore!.!.!. well, your poem worked there!. =)

Spirit has absolutely nothing to do with adorning the outer man in the first place!. So, in my humble opinion, the church has always needed the shift of importance it places on such outer world things to the spiritual things that really do matter in the inner man!. The heart has no need of feathers and veils or flowers!.

The poem is really beautiful though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The pomp and circumstance of the ladies - like unto a royal display - as they walk down the aisle - nodding to the other members of the church guild!. Ah yes - the display of peacocks in the heavenly garden!. But, I'm sure, they merited their status - by all the fine works that they did ?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I miss the sashaying ladies in their fancy hats, and the strutting gents in their double breasted suits!. I don't miss the pretentiousness that went along with the clothes, but people looked much better then!. Even a nasty shrew looked demur on Sunday!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

But did we lose something!. Yes, people disguised as Royal Princesses making believe they were Daughters of the King!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
