Concrete images are more powerful than abstractions!. Write about things that your readers can see, hear, smell, touch, and taste!.

Specific details are more powerful than generalizations!.

Show, don't tell!. If you write "She was brilliant" or "He was sexy" or "The flower was beautiful," you're just telling your readers what you think or feel!. Instead, show them something that will let them form their own impressions!.

Verbs and nouns do most of the heavy lifting in a poem!. Adverbs and adjectives have their place, but use them sparingly!.

Perhaps most important, read more poems than you write!. A lot more!. Exposing yourself to the work of other poets is one of the best things you can do for yourself as a writer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I find that I write the best free verse poems after I write a lot of poems in a certain structure - therefore, I would recommend trying to write sonnets, villanelles, sestinas, etc to name a few - these draw attention to repitition and meter which will help in the future!. Its also a must to read great poems - I suggest the "Seagull Reader Poetry" which has an amazing assortment of the best poems in history!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't know the rules but I always look for a rhyme you know, that is my style!.
example:
I have a hard day
but I think that is ok
life is hard in The USA
