Question: Free Verse Poetry!?

I'm going to write a free verse poem for my friend!. I need all the help and tips I can get! What is free verse!? How do you do it!? Are there rules to it!? I know nothing about poetry or iambs or anything! Please help!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The only rule
for free verse poetry is that
you go to a new line
when you feel like it,
instead of writing in paragraph form!.

You can write
whatever feels right to you,

Free verse is a term describing various styles of poetry that are written without using strict meter or rhyme, but that still are recognizable as poetry by virtue of complex patterns of one sort or another that readers will perceive to be part of a coherent whole!.
Every poet starts out writing free verse!. Meters are not as liberating, as free verse!.

When I write free verse, I try to use words more imaginatively that perhaps I would in a structured verse!. Surprise people, avoid cliches!.
I start by simply writing what I want to say!.!.!.!.!.example
You've been my friend since I was knee-high to an ant, remember how we used to stay out late!? And the day you fell out of the tree and broke your arm!?That was 20 years ago, but it seems like only yesterday!.!.!.!.!.okay!.

Then go back to the beginning, and rework it - trying for a rhythm!.
Since you were knee-high to an ant
You've been my friend
My confidante!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.(sorry, I didn't mean to rhyme)
No-one ever made me laugh like you
No-one ever knew me like you did
When we used to stay out late
And walk home through the darkest nights
We'd feel like we were conquering kings
We'd talk and laugh, do reckless things!.!.!.!.!.(sorry, rhyme again)
Remember that day
You climbed that tree!?
I dared you to do it
But I didn't know
