It takes a lot of skill to weave depth into a poem in such a manner that it can be understood by the masses!. I've heard it said that 5th - 7th grade level reading is the range you want to hit -- and I think that is a shame!. However, when you salt your poems with one or two words that require the dictionary, that's okay -- it can even be fun!.

When we work on our poetry, many times we are not letting the flow of words guide us, rather we are guiding (or forcing) the words to be in the order that matches the image we have in our mind!.

For example: If you want to write a Shakespearean sonnet, but as you begin you find that you have to force words with the iambic pentameter into an arrangement that has nothing to do with your desired work -- you overwork it!.

Let the words flow -- don't take a break -- either from the keyboard or pen and paper -- DO NOT EDIT -- as you go!. Write in this manner for at least 10 minutes, and you may find that you write longer, or that may be enough!. What is revealed to you are seeds that you can work with to create what your unconscious mind wants to write!.

Good luck, and don't quit!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

People like the simple ABAB rhyme scheme or ABCB!. They don't really like free verse, because there is deeper thinking involved!. They like the cookie cutter poems that are usually too simple to hold any meaning (though that's not to say that there isn't the occasional shocker)!. I enjoy writing free verse, even though it is EXTREMELY difficult to find people with enough brain capacity to appreciate it, which forces many great poets to write empty fluff poems!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because when you take more time you tend to over think things and add details that may or may not make them feel uncomfortable!. A poem that is written in an instant can be as great as a poem that took a year to write!. It just depends on who you are!.

For me i over think things and cam come up with vague metaphors when i take to long writing a poem!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i think the best material is written while not really trying, just writing the words and letting it flow free from your heart!. When we try and place to much emphasis on a concept or a structure the poem can lose its character and fluidity!. it is like Golf, better when you don't try too hard!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because the quick ones were inspired, the worked on ones were, well, worked on!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
