Imagine this poem as an actual occurrence!.
Imagine a young man, perhaps still in his twenties, perhaps having bin wounded, perhaps whole in body, but deeply scarred in his mind from his experiences in the war, haunted by the memory of seeing his companions killed and maimed!.

Now imagine the quiet, restrained bitterness as that man sees another, probably too old to have experienced the horrors of the trenches, encouringing children with his tales of the glory of war to "rally round the flag"!.

I can also reccommend:
Breakfast = William Gibson
Anthem for Doomed Youth = Wilfred OwenWww@QuestionHome@Com

We read it in History nearly 3 years ago and I cried!. :)

Wilfred Owen was the author, he's one of the most famous poets to come out of the war!. Sadly he was killed in action, but his poetry remains hugely popular!.

It's one of my favourite poems, firstly because of how amazingly it's written - the imagery, the lexis, the descriptions and techniques are subtle but they fit, they make the poem!. Secondly I love it because I'm interested in the war, I've dabbled in poetry about the war myself based on what my grandfather told me about the army and my own visits to war graves and memorials!.

My favourite line is 'An ecstasy of fumbling' - it suggests that even though it's dangerous, some people still find it exciting to do what they do, despite all the risks!. Sort of like finding the best in your situation!.

And I may be mistaken, but doesn't Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori mean something about dying for your country!? Like 'it's the sweetest thing to die for your country' or something!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Wilfred Owen was a soldier's poet in that he understood what soldiering is all about and had respect for the soldier!.
A powerful poem about war, death and youth!. It is sad that he was unable to write about the peace!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
