they slowly evolved into the creatures we

They evolved into a superior intelligence because,
without apposed thumbs, they were unable to

And they don't depend on fossil fuels!. Plus, it's really difficult for whales to hold a ciggy with their 20 foot flippers, not to mention trying to light a match at 20 fathoms deep!.
