Position:Home>Poetry> What makes a piece of poetry appealing?Question: What makes a piece of poetry appealing!? I've noticed that when I write something targetting at people who read alot of peotry; it doesn't appeal to a general reader, and vice versa!.
I've written pieces that other poets love, but casual readers don't think make sense!. At the same time, pieces that casual readers compare to famous poets, but other professional poets will claim as cliche' or overdone!. So what makes a piece of poetry appealing!?Www@QuestionHome@Com Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The same thing that makes a work of art appealing, or music!.!.!.it's all about the connection!. The reason your more developed poems connect better with experienced poets is because they are used to interpreting the poetic devices, their ear is tuned to internal rhyme and meter and can therefore appreciate the nuances of your poem and the subtle meanings that make it surprising!. On the other hand, how many 16 year olds really appreciate Mozart, or Handel, or Rimsey Korsekov!? Why!? because they painted images with sound, the intertwining of melody, harmony, multiple voices, etc!.!.!.all the things that are obvious to a trained ear!.!.!.but not to someone used to listening to today's youthful music!. The same is true about poetry!.!.!.especially with new poets!.!.!.they want to understand your poem and not have to work too hard to get there!.!.!.they don't have a classical education so they don't understand arcane references and subtle word play!.!.!.and they want to hear something that sounds "good" to them!.!.!.some want rhyme, some hate rhyme, etc!.!.!.just like some kids like broccoli and others hate it!. However, what's "obvious" to an untrained ear, is very likely to be something that's been said many times before, and whereas they'll think that's clever to use a familiar phrase, a more experienced poet will see it as cliche!.
