Shakespeare usually used "iambic pentameter"; "iambic" is the term used for describing how the syllables proceed, and it so happens that "iamb" sounds just like what it represents, an unaccented beat followed by an accented one!. Another example of an iamb would be "because" or "when I"!.!.!.it's the "ta-da" combination where "ta" is soft and "da" is accented!. Pentameter means "five (penta) sets of beats (meter)", which means he had a series of five iambs in a row!.!.!.thus the line was "iambic pentameter"!. He chose that pattern because he considered it the closest match to natural speech!. The "foot" is the iamb and the pattern starts on an up beat!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
